Jonah Carrel (he/him) is a Greensboro based postmodern contemporary choreographer, performer, and dance scholar. His choreography is grounded in physically demanding, irreverent, and absurdist movement that connects and converses with various historical themes. Drawn toward various histories within dance, society, and the natural world, Carrel’s work spotlights the personal, tumultuous, strange, and humorous narratives that have shaped our present. How can dancers use the past to analyze the present and choreograph for the future?

Through group and solo performances in environments, ranging from proscenium and black box theaters to studio spaces and museum galleries, Carrel upends the historical norm of exclusivity and makes concert dance more accessible and approachable to audiences.

As a freelancer, Carrel has choreographed and presented an array of live performances for venues like the Weatherspoon Art Museum, UNC Greensboro, BOOM Charlotte, College of Charleston, and Greensboro Project Space. As a performer, Carrel has worked with prominent contemporary choreographers Joanna Kotze, Jordan Llyod, Hélèn Simoneau, Chelsea Hilding, B.J. Sullivan, and ShiYu Liu among others. He holds an MFA in Dance and a BFA in Choreography and Performance from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
