Jonah Carrel (he/him) is a choreographer and dance scholar based in Greensboro, North Carolina. His choreographic work is grounded in physically demanding abstract, absurdist, and postmodern movements. Engaging themes in dance history and the natural world, his work explores global issues, like consumption and environmental destruction; informal inquiries on ideas like work and beauty; and theoretical ideas on space, time, and relationships. He employs and experiments with movement processes and ideas in his choreography that connect with, enrich, and contextualize his research on various topics in dance history.

Through group and solo performances in environments, ranging from proscenium and black box theaters to studio spaces and museum galleries, Carrel upends the historical norm of exclusivity and make concert dance more accessible and approachable to audiences. This allows more viewers to appreciate, contribute to, and learn about the richness this medium provides. Through his MFA studies in the School of Dance at UNC Greensboro, Carrel continues to explore ways in which choreography and history can interact in the same space. How can dancers use the past to analyze the present and choreograph for the future?
